Next Battlefield Game Returns To Modern Setting

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The next Battlefield game is ditching some of the things fans didn’t like about Battlefield 2042.

Electronic Arts has shared new information about the upcoming Battlefield game, confirming that it will be set in modern times and will not include certain features from Battlefield 2042 that were controversial among fans. Previous Battlefield games were set in World War I, World War II, and the future, but the new installment will take place in a modern-day setting, as reported by IGN. The first concept art released shows a European city with both land and sea elements, along with a forest on fire, creating a chaotic scene reminiscent of classic Battlefield gameplay.

In addition, the upcoming Battlefield game will be departing from certain features of Battlefield 2042 that were met with criticism from fans. Battlefield 2042 introduced maps that could support up to 128 players, a significant increase in scale for the series. However, this change was not well-received by the community, with matches often feeling sparsely populated. As a result, the next Battlefield installment will return to a player count more in line with previous titles.

Vince Zampella, the head of the Battlefield franchise, addressed the issue, stating, “We’re testing everything around what’s the most fun. We are designing something that is more akin to previous Battlefields. I’d rather have nice, dense, really nice, well-designed play spaces.” Zampella also confirmed that the controversial “Specialist” characters introduced in Battlefield 2042 will not be making a return, emphasizing a shift back to the traditional class system.

Regarding competition with Call of Duty, Zampella emphasized that Battlefield is focused on offering a distinct experience for its fanbase and is not aiming to directly challenge its competitor. He expressed optimism about the potential success of the new Battlefield game, suggesting that it could possibly outsell Call of Duty.

While a release date for the new Battlefield game has not been announced, there are reports indicating a potential launch in October 2025. Zampella also mentioned plans for EA to introduce a testing program for the game in 2025, aiming to engage the community and rebuild trust. The specifics of this testing program are yet to be revealed.
