AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 9000X3D chips don’t seem to be a significant advancement.

It appears that details about AMD’s unannounced Ryzen 9000X3D desktop processors have been leaked. However, similar to Intel’s new Arrow Lake desktop CPUs, it seems that the performance improvement over their predecessors may not be substantial. This is disappointing, especially considering the lukewarm reception of AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series.

According to slides from an MSI presentation shared by HardwareLuxx today (via VideoCardz), the new processors may exhibit impressive multicore performance improvements compared to the previous generation. For instance, an eight-core 9000X3D could outperform a Ryzen 7 7900X3D by up to 28 percent in Cinebench R23. However, the gains in Black Myth: Wukong and Shadow of the Tomb Raider are reported to be as low as 2 percent, according to MSI’s initial testing.

When compared to the standard Ryzen 9000 series, MSI found that the X3D performance was very similar. MSI does mention that “Performance is expected to be better on PR samples and retail chips,” though.

It’s unclear whether HardwareLuxx broke an embargo or if MSI might be responsible for the leak. Strangely, it appears that the section of the presentation was mostly about Intel’s new Core Ultra 200S chips, and it’s not clear why unreleased AMD chips would be part of that section. The presentation shows that MSI’s discussion of Intel chips was embargoed until October 10th.
