10 Years After It Was Pulled Offline, Viral Mobile Game Flappy Bird Is Returning

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The popular mobile game sensation Flappy Bird is poised for a comeback a decade after its creator removed it from online platforms.

Back in 2014, Dong Nguyen, the developer based in Vietnam, surprised the gaming community by withdrawing the viral hit Flappy Bird from the App Store and Google Play Store, even though it was generating substantial revenue each day. Nguyen expressed his mixed feelings about the game by stating, “I can call Flappy Bird a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it.”

Now, a revamped version of Flappy Bird is in the works for a release by the end of October, spanning multiple platforms, including web browsers. Additionally, iOS and Android versions are planned for launch in 2025. However, this new iteration of Flappy Bird is not from Nguyen, rather it’s from ‘The Flappy Bird Foundation,’ described as “a new team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world.”

The Flappy Bird Foundation revealed that it has obtained the official Flappy Bird trademark from Gametech Holdings LLC, a U.S. company that seems to have acquired the trademark from Nguyen. They also secured the rights for the original game and character from Piou Piou vs. Cactus, the mobile game that supposedly served as the original inspiration for the Flappy Bird character.

The Flappy Bird Foundation is already discussing upcoming Flappy Bird releases, which will introduce new game modes, characters, progression, and extensive multiplayer challenges.

Michael Roberts, the “chief creative” behind Flappy Bird’s return, expressed excitement about reintroducing Flappy Bird and offering a fresh experience that will engage players for years to come. Roberts mentioned, “We have big plans for our little Bird!”

Kek, the developer of Piou Piou, is also involved and shared, “Today is a milestone not just in gaming but for me personally. It’s so cool to see how influential Piou Piou has been for developers and hundreds of millions of gamers over the years. It’s incredible to work alongside such a dedicated team of fans and creators who are truly passionate about changing the industry narrative and together bringing the original Flappy Bird back to life.”

There is no mention of Dong Nguyen in The Flappy Bird Foundation’s statement to the press. Nguyen, who has largely avoided the limelight since removing Flappy Bird from online platforms, hasn’t tweeted in years.
